The work of tourism managers is very challenging for two main reasons.
First, they have the opportunity to show their country to people coming from all over the world with different cultures and traditions.
Secondly, they need to be creative in order to persuade those tourists to come back again.
In other words they have to market their product/ service and for this a creative and dynamic personality is required.
Different target markets have to be identified and specific packages have to be designed for them.
Tourism managers work with people who are on holiday, although they themselves are not on holiday.
Their irregular working hours call for persistence and determination.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Tourism managers must be able to work with and be friendly to all kinds of people, not only foreign tourists speaking a different language but also people who may have severe disabilities.
As managers they will have people working under them.
This means that they need to have organisational abilities and delegation skills.
What qualifications are needed?
There are no specific qualifications, but knowledge of foreign languages is a considerable advantage.
