In these days of massive financial investment in sport, sports managers design and develop structures and management systems to administer and control the products of these investments and sponsorships.
The scientific design and management of training programmes for top sportsmen and women, as well as for ordinary people who just want to keep fit, are some of the functions of sports managers.
Their dual expertise in management and sports training allow them to take on the management of enterprises such as gymnasiums or sports clubs.
They must also be able to manage financial matters and give advice on finding sponsors.
In addition they can be involved in personnel affairs such as recruitment, selection, development and motivation of personnel.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Active sport participation and achievement are not prerequisites, but a good sporting career, even if in the past, certainly enhances a sports manager?'?s image. He or she must obviously have an interest in recreation and sports, as well as in management.
The ability to get on well and communicate with people, particularly in the sporting world, is a considerable advantage.
What qualifications are needed?
There are no specific qualifications, but post-school courses in book-keeping, accounts and commerce are valuable assets.
