Make-up Artist

Make-up Artist

Job overview
Make-up artists use make-up to give a “natural” look to people appearing under the limelight on the live theatre stage, or on the television or cinema screen.

They also create special effects such as wounds and ageing.

What do people do in this job?
Make-up artists are always present on the sets of theatre productions and during the filming of movies or television programmes.

Their task is to see to it that the actors' and presenters' hair and make-up are done correctly and touched up when necessary.

They are also responsible for wigs, facial hair and special effects.

Make-up artists work closely with directors and costume and lighting designers.

They must do thorough research to ensure that actors' hair and make-up represent the period depicted in the film or production.

When special effects are needed, especially where futuristic or mythological stories are portrayed, make-up artists must use their imagination.

Make-up artists analyse the faces of their clients, before they start applying the makeup. They take into consideration shape, bone structure, eye shape and complexion.

Make-up sessions can be very time-consuming, especially when special effects have to be created, and make-up artists have to stand on their feet for long periods.

They are expected to work at any time of the day or night.

What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Make-up artists must be artistically inclined with a well-developed sense of colour and form.

Imagination, initiative and originality are important qualities, plus manual dexterity.

Because make-up artists work with people all the time, friendliness, patience and tact are very important.

What qualifications are needed?
Some make-up artists will have trained in an art school, but this is not essential.
