Job overview
The art of a locksmith is that of opening or closing locks without having the original key.

Locksmiths also repair, replace and rebuild locks and their mechanical parts.

They can also make duplicate keys.

What do people do in this job?
In emergencies, such as when customers are locked out of cars or buildings, locksmiths pick the locks if the keys are inside, or make duplicate keys if the keys are lost.

Locksmiths repair damaged locks by replacing tumblers, springs and other parts.

Combination locks are opened by manipulation or by the use of a drill.

Some locksmiths install and repair burglar and fire alarm systems.

Locksmiths often travel with motor vehicles, equipped as mobile workshops to save money and travelling time.

Sometimes they are? "?on call?" ?around the clock for emergencies.

What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
This profession requires mechanical aptitude, good eye-hand co-ordination, excellent eyesight, meticulous accuracy, manual dexterity and the ability to concentrate well.

There is need, too, for tact, dependability and the capacity to work with people.

A good reputation will preserve the public's confidence in the locksmith.

What qualifications are needed?
Preferably good school-leaving results in technical or science subjects.
