In commerce inventory and stores managers ensure that materials and equipment are available at the right time and in the right place for whatever work has to be done.

Their position is important, for they control and safeguard up to 70 per cent of an organization's entire expenditure.

The duties and responsibilities of inventory and stores managers include:

• Control, storage and distribution of an organisation's production materials and spares, as well as control of its bookkeeping and budget.
• Security and safety of the inventory and maintenance of all inventory records.
• Ensuring good communication between the stores and other departments
• Receiving stock and notifying relevant departments of its arrival.
• Inspecting and checking all deliveries and returning rejected stock to the supplier.
• Moving stock from the stores to the production areas.
• Paying accounts. ?All incoming goods must be checked against the purchase order and if everything is correct, the accounts department is instructed to pay the supplier.

Inventory and stores managers must, above all, be absolutely honest, with a strong sense of responsibility, since they are in charge of valuable stock.

In addition they should be good organisers and be able to work well with people.
