Job overview
Inspectors of works oversee the construction and maintenance of buildings.

They control the construction process, building management and civil, mechanical, electro-technical and electronic components of buildings owned by their employers.

What do people do in this job?
The main responsibility of inspectors of works is the maintenance of all government buildings in a certain area assigned to them.

Usually they are employed in a building, mechanical or electro-technical field, depending on their qualifications.

They ensure that government policy and building regulations are followed.

When a project is assigned to a contractor, they ensure that the funds are wisely spent, that the original plan and specification are achieved and that the budget is met.

They inspect existing buildings and properties, report to their managers and give advice on steps that should be taken for necessary improvements.

They draw up specifications and plans for work that must be done and ensure that they are carried out.

Three main areas are:?
Building specifications: When a building is being planned, the purpose of that building must be considered.

A hospital must for example be built in such a way that the patients can progress through it in orderly stages, from admission to dismissal.

Technical aspects such as water supply, sewage and parking space for vehicles also fall under this area.

Mechanical specifications: The plans should make provision for mechanical aspects such as air-conditioning and steam boilers.

This equipment should be kept in good working order during the life-time of the building.

Electro-technical specifications
: This includes lights, electrical circuits, light fittings, electrical power points, lifts and other electrical equipment.

Inspectors must make sure that all these elements are in good working condition.

Inspectors of works liaise closely with architects and engineers. ?Their working day involves office-work as well as on-site inspections of buildings.

What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Mathematical ability is particularly important and inspectors of works should be able to relate easily to people.

What qualifications are needed?
An inspector of works would normally have tertiary level training in engineering.
