Earth-moving equipment mechanics detect faults, maintain and repair the heavy machinery used in the construction of highways, dams, airports and pipelines and in mining operations.
What do people do in this job?
Earth-moving equipment mechanics are concerned with the upkeep and repair of the entire machine, from replacing tyres, to checking mechanical components.
Their work involves repairing not only the hydraulic systems and power shift transmission, but also electrical and electronic systems.
In addition they must be able to handle various fuel systems - removing, dismantling, setting, calibrating and replacing components, especially in fuel injection systems.

When mechanical parts have to be manufactured, mechanics work from drawings and make use of various measuring instruments.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Earth-moving equipment mechanics need mechanical and practical aptitude and must be able to work independently and think analytically.
They must be adaptable to changes in technology and therefore be able to work from service manuals.
Dexterity, good hand eye co-ordination and good physical health are other important qualities.
What qualifications are needed?
Earth-moving equipment mechanics must be familiar with electrical, electronic and hydraulic principles and must also have knowledge of engines and fuel systems.
Therefore they need to have served an apprenticeship which will have included technical college studies in these areas.
