Diesel mechanics diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults in diesel vehicles, construction machinery and detached diesel engines. They also maintain engines.
What do people do in this job?
Diesel mechanics diagnose the cause of the problem in a defective engine, gearbox, suspension or differential.
They can often locate the problem by listening to the noise in the engine, although electronic diagnosing equipment is normally used. All parts are then repaired or replaced.
It is essential that the various engine parts are clean when they are assembled and therefore a great number of cleaning agents are used to remove oil and dirt.
The mechanics complete job cards, time the work that is done and furnish information on the parts that should be replaced.
They also assist in training and supervising apprentices.
Working conditions vary according to where mechanics are employed.
They may work in a specially equipped workshop or may be required to carry out repairs and maintenance on farms, construction sites etc.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Good eyesight and eye-hand co-ordination, deft fingers, practical aptitude and mechanical insight are important qualities.
Physical strength is required to handle heavy engine parts and to undo rusted bolts.
What qualifications are needed?
A completed apprenticeship with an established, reliable company.
