Crane Operator

Crane Operator

Job overview
A crane operator drives and controls a crane to transfer heavy objects from one place to another.

What do people do in this job?
A crane operator's work is considerably more complicated than simply hoisting, moving and lowering materials.

For instance, if material is hoisted too quickly, it may result in a snapped cable or it may cause the cargo in a ship's hold to shift. As soon as the material is lifted from the floor, the operator has to manoeuvre the crane in such a way that the material can then be lowered in the prescribed position and place.

In addition, some cranes (gantry cranes) run on rails, which means that the operator also has to regulate the forward and backward movement of the crane on the rails. In this case, the bridge where the crane sits serves as a substitute for the arm of a normal crane.

This means that the cabin can be manoeuvred to a position right above the place where the load has to be deposited.

The operator is required to perform all of these actions.

The working conditions of crane operators vary from place to place. Persons operating overhead cranes are often exposed to the heat, smoke and gases which originate from factories, while those working outside can be exposed to various weather conditions.

Modern cranes, however, have comfortable cabins ensuring maximum protection.

Overtime work may be required at times and for this the operator receives extra pay.

What kinds of people are suitable for this career?

Persons who wish to become crane operators should have a good head for heights, as they usually have to climb a vertical ladder to reach their cabin high above the ground.

Furthermore operators must judge distance and heights accurately while manipulating a number of buttons, levers and pedals in proper sequence to pick up and deliver material, which requires good eye-hand co-ordination.

Strong nerves and a responsible attitude towards the work are also important.

Persons who easily become nervous or impatient can cause considerable damage and endanger other people's lives by snapping cables or dropping material

What qualifications are needed?
There are no formal qualifications, but good physical health, good eyesight, quick reactions and the ability to judge distances and assess volumes are important.
