In Zimbabwe this function is the responsibility partly of the Department of Prisons and partly of the Department of Social Welfare.

What do people do in this job?

• The safe custody of prisoners and other persons in detention?.
• Humane detention and treatment of prisoners.
• Organising commercial activities such as building operations, workshops and farming which offer job opportunities to prisoners.
• Supervision and control over probationers and parolees in the community.
• Various programmes with the aim of rehabilitating prisoners.
• Preparation of all prisoners for their release and integration into the community.
• Helping released prisoners to cope successfully in society again.

What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
To handle the various jobs in this area people need to have integrity, a sense of responsibility towards, and at the same time an ability to “see through?”? their fellow human beings.

Good communication skills are important.

What qualifications are needed?
Knowledge of Shona and Ndebele and satisfactory school-leaving certificates.
