Concrete technicians are involved with the various practical and technical aspects of concrete construction.
In laboratories they carry out tests to determine the properties and performance of building materials such as cement, stone, sand, extenders and chemical admixtures.
The information obtained is used for mix design purposes and for compiling specifications.
They supervise work on construction sites to ensure that correct concrete practice is followed and carry out further tests to ensure that the quality of construction materials used complies with the relevant specifications.
Concrete technicians also conduct laboratory research projects and special investigations of building and construction materials and techniques.
They have to set and maintain high standards of design specification and workmanship to ensure that concrete structures are strong, durable and, at the same time, economical.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
Concrete technicians should have an aptitude for mathematics and science subjects and be able to work methodically and accurately and find laboratory work interesting.
They should also keep up with the latest developments in the concrete industry.
What qualifications are needed?
Good school results in mathematics and science with, preferably, City and Guilds or similar certificates of relevant tertiary education.
