Computer Careers
Jobs overview
As a result of its phenomenal growth over recent decades the computer industry offers a variety of careers, some of which are set out below.
What do people do in these jobs?
Computer technicians?
Install, maintain and repair the complex collection of electronic and mechanical components that make up a computer.
Their work involves mastering and then implementing specific procedures.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Computer technicians need to have had instruction and training in electronics, plus good eyesight, and eye-hand co-ordination. (Colour blindness would be a serious disadvantage.)
Computer Operators?
Communicate with the computer via the keyboard.
What they put in, print out etc will depend on the type of business for which the computer is being used.
They must understand the computer's capabilities and limitations and the various sorts of software installed in it.
They should be sure to keep their computer, printer etc. ?clean and in working order and be able to deal with minor malfunctions, or know where to report any that they cannot handle themselves.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Operators must be able to concentrate for long periods and maintain accuracy throughout.
They must be able to work independently, as well as in a team.
Good eye-hand co-ordination is essential.
Computer programmers?
Are responsible for the detailed design of how the computer should perform a specific task.
Computer programmes are written in special computer languages of which COBOL is the most commonly used for commercial programmes.
The sequence of instructions is entered on coding sheets or keyboard terminals that are connected to the computer.
Programmers must test the programme to see if their instructions are correct.
Some programmes can be written within hours, while programmes which trigger further processing, could take up to a year to complete.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Above average intelligence is essential.
Computer programmers must have mathematical aptitude and enjoy problem solving.
Knowledge of computer languages is essential.
They must also be able to concentrate for long periods.
Network Controllers?
Are responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of equipment used to link the network through the telephone system.
They are also responsible for detecting and correcting faults in the system.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Network controllers must have sound knowledge of computers, combined with good communication skills
System Analysts?
Study the problems and needs of computer users and write specifications for computer systems which programmers can then convert into computer language.
What kinds of people are suitable for this job?
Systems analysts must have a thorough knowledge of computers, as well as insight into the functioning of organisations.
Operations Managers and Project Managers?
Operations managers plan, organise and control the operation of all data processing equipment, software and personnel.
Project managers plan and control all the different projects and ensure that projects are completed by target dates.
What kinds of people are suitable for these jobs?
Operations managers and project managers should be able to make quick decisions and have good interpersonal communication skills.
What qualifications are needed?
Qualifications range from the basic familiarity with computers required of the operators up through increasingly advanced knowledge to the expertise required of the programmers.
Today secondary schools will probably make available the basic qualifications which can then be supplemented by further study at technical colleges etc.
For the higher realms of programming a university degree in computer studies is advisable.
