Carpenters cut and shape timber.

What do people do in this job?
The traditional tools of hammer, saw and plane are still used extensively by carpenters. Certain portable electric tools, such as drills are used, but in general the trade has not become highly mechanised.

The work of carpenters begins with the study of architectural drawings or furniture designs to enable them to select the correct timber.

Carpenters have to be able to recognise and utilise the different types of timber to their best advantage.

Prospective carpenters should enjoy working outdoors, if necessary, and be strong and healthy.

What qualifications are needed?
For carpenters to do their work accurately and neatly the following will be expected of them: hand dexterity, good eye-hand co-ordination and spatial and form perception.
