A butler, who is actually the chief servant of the household, can be a personal assistant to the employer.
He looks after almost all the aspects of running the house including house keeping, upholstery, library keeping, small accounts and much more.
For rich people in society and business with huge households, a butler is a boon because such people do not usually have the time to attend to the details of the household themselves.
A good butler should perform his many tasks with efficiency and correctness.
He runs everything within the house like ordering supplies of groceries, wine etc.
He takes care of crockery and silverware, upholstery, carpets, rugs, foyer, landings, bedrooms and every single aspect of furnishing and ensures that everything is spic and span.
He employs and trains other servants to help in the running of the household.
Typically a butler does not take care of the garden.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
A butler needs to be physically presentable, courteous and discreet.
He should be able to consort easily, and if necessary hold his ground, with people in the highest stations in life, and at the same time exercise his authority over the household staff.
What qualifications are needed?
Professional institutes offer courses in “butling?”?, these are not essential for becoming a butler, but are advisable.
