?Biokineticists are exercise specialists who improve people's physical condition, through physical assessment and by prescribing healthy exercise habits.
?What do people do in this job?
?A biokineticist's work falls under three headings:-
?To evaluate someone's condition the biokineticist uses scientific methods and instruments, such as treadmill, bicycle ergometer, and pulse frequency monitors.
?Exercise risks are identified and the different basic components of fitness are assessed, namely the heart and respiratory systems, muscle strength, muscle and joint flexibility, speed of movement, co-ordination and posture.
?Such evaluations are made of athletes, for example, who have been injured and wish to know whether they have fully recovered.
What kinds of people are suitable for this career?
?First of all, biokineticists should have an interest in sport and physical activities and enjoy working with people and motivating them.
?They should be prepared to work long and irregular hours with people who take part in exercise programmes before and after normal working hours.
?They should also be prepared to work within a joint medical team.
?Several big companies employ biokineticists to develop and recommend exercise programmes for their employees.
?Biokineticists are also involved in the development of specialised physical training programmes at biokinetic centres, where professional service is offered to the community.
Biokineticists at universities are involved in research and the training of students in this discipline.
What qualifications are needed?
?Normally a diploma or BSc degree in biological sciences, preferably including some training in biokinetics
