This course is open to anyone who can read and write English, and especially individuals that have a creative or artistic talent.

This is what you’ll study in the Events Decor course:

1. MODULE ONE – TYPES OF EVENTS/FUNCTION

There are many different types of events, hence the need for different types of décor. Learn about the various aspects of different events such as:

1.3 Types of Events

  • Weddings
  • Birthdays / Anniversaries
  • Trade Shows
  • Church Functions
  • Corporate Events
  • Grand / Official Opening

2. MODULE TWO – UNDERSTANDING COLOURS
This module teaches the basics of how to get the right colours in the right places. It also ensures that you follow the simple principles of colours when you are designing your décor.

Further, the module provides an understanding of the fundamentals and psychological aspects of colours.

Topics to be covered are:

2.3Colour Psychology

3.MODULE THREE – FABRIC DRAPING
3.1Theory
3.1.1 Learn to assemble rays, swags and dazzling large–scale focal points like cascading waterfalls, fabric walls, multi-layer backdrops, etc
3.1.2Fabric draping techniques
3.1.3Cost-effective decorating methods
3.1.4Learn fundamental skills and concepts to create several different styles of backdrops, fabric arches and table draping
3.2 Fabric Draping Practicals

a)Wall decorations

  • Scalloping using single material
  • Scalloping using double material
  • Butterfly design
  • Adding Fairy Lights

b) Ceiling

  • Make-up of ceiling
  • Using single material

4. MODULE FOUR – TABLE DÉCOR
4.1 Theory
Table décor is incredibly varied and selecting the right look depends on personal preferences and the plans for the event. It is important that the table décor be in sync or harmony with all the other décor, e.g. the walls, ceiling, etc

4.1.1Different sizes and shapes of tables

4.1.2 Table Décor

  • Tables Linen (material, colours, sizes)

4.1.3Centrepiece – fresh flowers, dried flowers, artificial flowers

4.1.4 Additional accessories

  • Candles

4.2 Table Décor Practical
a) Long & Short Falls

  • Long falls using single material
  • Long and short falls using single material

b) Pick & Drop Falls

  • Pick and drop falls

  • Pick and drop falls using material
  • Single scalloping

c) Scalloping

  • Single scalloping with roses

5. MODULE FIVE - FLOWER ARRANGEMENT
The module teaches participants how to arrange flowers in a variety of attractive styles that are pleasing to the eye and are sure to enhance any space. Participants learn the art and the business of flower arranging.

5.1Module will cover the basics of:

  • Composition
  • Colour
  • Proportion
  • Balance
  • Harmony
  • Shape

5.2 Basic principles of design, different types of arrangements. The 8 basic Flower Arranging Designs:

  • Horizontal
  • Vertical
  • Triangular
  • Crescent
  • Oval
  • Minimal
  • Lazy ‘S’ or Horizontal curve
  • Free Standing

5.3. Create elegant arrangements and centrepieces to decorate tables, arches , etc

6. MODULE SIX - DÉCOR ACCESSORIES
This module looks at other or additional accessories that will enhance the décor. The accessories include:

  • Balloons
  • Candles
  • Fairy Lights
  • Red Carpet
  • Chair Linen
  • Logo and Names
  • Props e.g. arch


7. MODULE SEVEN - BUSINESS & MARKETING
This short module will equip participants with the relevant business and marketing skills to enable individuals run a profit making events décor businesses, on a small scale. The module covers the following;

7.1 Learn professionalism and run your business to make a profit
7.2 Running your business as a business
7.3 Low budget marketing
7.4 Useful tools for promoting business
7.5 Networking – identifying business partners




What exams will you write?
Students’ practical work will be assessed throughout the course and a written exam will be conducted at the end of the course. Since this is a ‘hands-on’ course, 80% of the exam will be by continuous assessment, while 20% of the final mark will come from a theory exam.

When and where are the classes and what are the fees?

Lessons are offered at different times on different campuses, with some lessons being held during the day, and others in the evening or at weekends.

Often the same course can be studied at a variety of different times, so you can choose the one which is more convenient to you.

You’ll get your personal timetable when you register at Speciss College.

 

 



What about books and stationery?
You’ll need to bring your own notebooks and writing materials to your classes. For your convenience, we have a range of stationery items at the Speciss bookshops.
